Authenticity is not the only ingredient
I have heard it for years:
“You should vote for him. He is so real.”
“He is the best boss. He will be real with you.”
“Go to his church. He is so transparent.”
What my generation and below think we want, no what we demand, is authenticity from our leaders. We offer a simple contract. If our leaders are real with us, then we follow.
Authenticity and relevance have become the prominent demands in our social contract. There is a problem.
It is huge.
This simple contract is flawed. Doomed to disappoint us from the beginning. For nowhere stated in our unwritten agreement is for leaders to show us the way to the true desire our hearts, Jesus. We have no expectation for them to be lovers of God. This leads us to following the most authentic looking substitutes. Yes, we are the manipulated masses. Now, most every leader looks authentic. And ultimately, above all else, it is a problem only Jesus can solve.
