Bored with Church or bored with God?
By the time us men hit middle age we have resigned ourselves to the boredom of the church service. I sat next to two good men in a coffee shop this morning. I was working on my laptop, they were chatting. We exchanged pleasantries and found we had gone to the same church years ago. The conversation swung to where they are attending now.
Both said something to the effect: “I really don’t get excited about any church. I go there because my wife/family benefits.”
The response was typical. I get them. To them and millions of other men, there is not much there. They full well expected me to sell them on my church. They braced themselves like I was getting ready to pitch them a multi-level marketing scheme.
I pulled up. A church service is not what we need. We need something more. We need to fully engage our relationship with Jesus and fully integrate it into our love of our wife, our work, and the leadership of our family. The church can do this but the context of a service is difficult.
I understand the boredom with the church service. It so often does little to foster those things.
