No rest in giving up
This weekend, on a hike in the Rockies, I was faced with several false summits. On the way back I was listening to Craig McConnell and John Eldredge and Ransomed Heart Ministries talk through Craig’s battle with Leukemia. Here is the guy who mentored John in college speaking of this insurmountable battle. Those false summits came to mind as Craig began to describe his temptations to give up and give in. He describes them as “false hopes” of release and rest. “If only I give in, then I can rest”.
Wow, how relevant to us in our battles. There is no rest in giving up. The enemy will not show you favor in your giving in. No, in his deception, he will rush in and go for the kill shot. On the other hand, rest, true rest are in words like “well, done good and faithful servant, enter into MY rest.” We can experience the God kind of rest in the midst of incredible stress, suffering and anxiety.
Craig’s battle with cancer is no different than the battles you are facing. He is under attack in the belief that God is good and does not leave us. It would be easy to believe his attack is leukemia. That is just the surface. Deep down, the attacks are full frontal assaults on our relationship with Jesus. We come into alignment with Jesus when we recognize an attack for what it is, spend time with Jesus and reorient ourselves to His goodness.
