The playbook for uncertainty.
Tonight, after noting the confusion in my own heart and among my friends and family surrounding the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, I read 2 Chronicles 7. This is the famous passage not often mentioned in frantic times like now. Many are uncomfortable with their choices for leading this land. 2 Chronicles 7 is interesting as the Lord is reassuring his people and telling them what to do when things go really bad for a nation. In fact, at that time, the nation of Israel was at the height of its power. Things were going really well. Solomon had just finished rebuilding the temple, sacrifices in unprecedented numbers had just happened, the land was healed. Israel has incredible wealth. Yet, the Lord knew his people all to well and wanted to give them a playbook to follow when times were different. This was loving guidance far in advance of calamity befalling Israel. Like a loving father simply saying “Here is what to do if….”
I believe He offers us this playbook today, even still.
So, to recap, the Lord spoke to the Israelites during a really good time letting them know what to do during really bad times:
“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.
– 2 Chronicles 7:12-15
The Lord has already given us a playbook for these uncertain times. He delivered his words to us well before this moment. It starts with you and I. His words are true whoever comes to power. So don’t lose hope and become mired in fear, cynicism and uncertainty. Follow a path of repentance in your own life, humbling yourself, and pray humbly. The Lord will turn and honor your desires toward him. We will respond to your heart felt prayers.
