What we do not believe
God is good.
I believe most christians believe this, at least on the surface.
What we do not believe is we are good. Deep down many of us seem so mired in shame that we no longer approach God. He is too good. And we are too bad.
The tragedy is we misinterpret our own christian theologies and justify our stance. We lament “I am sinful. When Adam sinned, I sinned. In fact, I know this to be true because of all the stuff no one knows about. All the things I’ve covered up and hidden over the years”
It’s not true. God is good. And under the shed blood of Jesus and His resurrection, you are good. Like Adam prior to the fall. Like Eve in the garden. No shame. Yes it is true without Jesus we experience total depravity.
Yet, He is the game changer.
John Eldredge writes God is Romance and Satan sends Arrows:
“The Romance whispers that we are someone special, that our heart is good because it is made for someone good; the Arrows tell us we are a dime a dozen, worthless, even dark and twisted, dirty.”
You are good and when left to your own devices you most deeply desire to do the right things. It’s your truest nature.
